A Deejay A Day: Dj Batboy (Republished)

(This interview was originally published on 2/28/18. Everything is as is)

Is there a meaning behind your Dj name? There really isn't, I was given the nickname Bats, which eventually grew into BatBoy while living in Texas a few years back How long have you been spinning? I believe 4 of 5 years now? I honestly don't remember how long it's been, all the free alcohol makes everything cloudy What was your favorite cartoon growing up? That's a tough one, most likely Courage The Cowardly Dog! Stupid Dog! If you could be any mystical creature; what would you be and why? I'm honestly not entirely sure on this one, I'd have to think on it Do you have a go-to set list? What's the first three on it? I don't, I like jumping around genres and see what gets the crowd going the most

What kind of music do you spin? Primarily Deathrock and Goth rock, but I'll mix in industrial, ebm, synthpop/wave, aggrotech, and anything in between. It also depends on the gig, I've even had events where I threw down country and hip hop! When are your next Dj gigs? My next big gig is in March, it's for Denver's annual Goth Prom! This year I'll be amongst 3 other amazing DJs, as well as the band Covenant!

So tell us about all the business of booking and promoting events? I know how you feel, because we do similar things, but tell our users your day to day stuff with all that. Booking small local events is usually pretty easy. However, booking for larger events is where it gets more difficult. I'll come up with a plan of what I want to apply, then outsource and see if any of the acts I want are available, and if so, are they affordable. If everything is a go, we move on to contracts and riders, sign it all in, then wait for the show! You are the Co-Founder of "Colorodo Goth Fest" tell us a bit about that? I came up with the idea for a mini-music fest after I attended Ghouls Night out Fest in 2013 (I think it was 2013), after realizing we didn't have much here in CO related to that. I contacted a few friends and we started putting it together. It was a blast, as much as it was a hassle. We're going on out 4th year now and moved to a larger venue, and are excited to see how this year goes. It's been growing rather quickly, so we hope to make this year one of our biggest! We're still finalizing the lineup for this year, every year we have more and more submissions, so stay tuned if you're interested! So we know you DJ, but you're also in two bands? What kind of genre are the bands? What is your stance in those bands? Tell us about it! I'm in a local band called WitchHands, and the other is Shambling Riot (we may change the name here soon). WitchHands is Deathrock/Goth Rock with a little heavier music elements blended into it. Shambling Riot is more along the lines of horror-punk and old school punk & hardcore. I play guitar in both, and manage over WitchHands as well as book. Dj Batboy in action!

Morticia: Witchands! Yesssssss

When are your next band gigs? WitchHands is playing a St. Patrick's Day Party and Shambling Riot's is April 28th. We heard you raise and collect Tarantulas? How many do you have? What are their names?? I have currently 6, I was up to 21 at one point but slimmed it down due to a rough train of financial difficulties. I only have 2 named right now, Nadine (named after the song from Blitzkid), and Elise (named after 'Letters to Elise' from the cure.

Morticia: Woah, that's awesome! And those are great songs. "Letters to Elise" is one of my favorite songs by the cure. Aside from their song "From the edge of the deep green sea."

People want to know; what do you love about djing? Is it being able to get people to dance? Or watching your superhuman Dj skills? Or did you make a deal with a wizard? It's hard to say without sounding extremely cheesey. I love bringing people together and sharing music. Watcing someone dance and then run up to the booth to ask who that was makes me really happy. In essence, you can say I made a deal with a wizard! Morticia: I really like this photo so I posted it.

Last question; we'll sort of. Leave us with a quote: Necrophilia is a class 2 misdemeanor here in Colorado.
