A Deejay a Day: Dj Xerstorkitte (Republished)

(This interview was originally published in February 2018)

Is there a meaning behind your Dj name?

My DJ name, Xerstorkitte is a bit ridiculous, I made the name up myself. I took the German word “zerstört” which roughly translates to “destroy” (I think?) and replaced the Z with an X, cut of the T and added kitte. I thought it would look good and wanted it to mean “Destroyed Kitten”. I was 17 when I made it up ha ha! It is very difficult for people to spell and pronounce but they rarely forget it!

How long have you been spinning?I’ve been DJ’ing for six years now. My debut was at The Cobweb Club in Sydney. After finishing my set I was approached by another promoter to DJ at their night and since then I have been DJ’ing regularly both in Sydney and throughout Australia. Do you like dragons or mermaids? Dragons. Do you have a go-to set list? What's the first three on it? No, I don’t have a go-to set list. Depending on where I am DJ’ing and which genre I will have a couple of songs on my mind I will play and then depending on the crowd, will build my set around what they’re reacting to and go where the music takes me. What kind of music do you spin? I’m predominantly known for playing Goth, Deathrock, Punk and Post Punk however I also enjoy playing Alternative, Electro, Industrial, EBM, New Wave, Ska and Eighties. It all depends on the night!

Has anyone ever come up to you asking you to play a song, and thrown up on you or near you? No, that’s never happened and I certainly hope it never does! I have had a drunk punter break my phone screen (I often use the notepad on my phone to write my set down) So we know you DJ, but you're also running a club out in Australia? Yes, I am currently running two clubs at the moment. The Witching Hour is a Goth, Deathrock, Punk and Post Punk night that I run a few times a year. I also run Threshold, a monthly BDSM play party club. I will also be bringing back Club Corrosion a Goth, Industrial and Alternative club for one night only on the 14th of April in Sydney. We hardly ever ask this; but can you spoil us with a few photos from one of your events? Sure! Here’s some photos from The Witching Hour on the 26th of January! Some photos of DJ Xerstorkitte's last event. I almost posted 20 photos, because they are so pretty. But I buckled it down to 10

Where have you DJ’ed? Do you have any favourites? I’ve DJ’ed extensively in Sydney as well interstate in Australia. I recently had my first international DJ gig in Japan at Colourless Dreams. I’ve been really lucky, I have supported Peter Hook and the Light, Gary Numan and most recently The Chameleons. My favourite place to DJ is at 1334 in Melbourne a Goth, Deathrock, Punk and Post Punk Party which is always so much fun! When are your next Dj and events? I’ll be DJ’ing at INCUB8 which is an Industrial, EBM and Electro club on the 16th of March. The week after that I will be DJ’ing at The Chamber which is a fetish club where I play Goth, Post Punk, Alternative and New Wave. After that, I will run Club Corrosion and The Witching Hour. Morticia: I really like this photo of you so I'm adding it, for selfish reasons

So you're vegan? Do you have a "Veggie Grill" in Australia? (We have one here in California and it's so yummy!) Yes! I am vegan and absolutely love it! No, we don’t have a Veggie Grill here in Australia however I am sure it is delicious! Melbourne has a vegan pizza place called Red Sparrow Pizza which is amazing. I go there every time I visit! So you're a collector of books, antiques and oddities? What kind of books do you like reading? And what kind of oddities do you collect? I certainly am. I love to read anything interesting! I collect a lot of art history and technique books, history books, architecture, odd books on different subjects… I absolutely adore antique Victorian gothic carved furniture, antique industrial furniture and antique medical/dental furniture. I collect anything strange, unusual or weird!

Morticia: Ooohhhh can we see!

Morticia: I really love your book collection! I know we are asking a lot of questions; but there's so much we want to know. Can you tell us about the turtles you save? Do you have any photos? At the moment I currently have 4 rescue turtles in my care. They came to me from people who either weren’t taking care of them properly or didn’t want them any longer. Some of them have health issues like shell rot which can be life threatening. These turtles will live with me for the rest of their lives. I also have some rescue blue tongue lizards. I do some work with Turtle Rescue New South Wales which is made up of a collective of people who love turtles. We go out to building developments and try to rescue them from the dams. Often the government will do a report and say that there are no turtles left but the truth is there are usually hundreds. We get out there in the dam and try to collect as many as we can. We also try to save frogs, eels etc. Once the turtles have been rescued they are released into nearby bodies of water that are not at risk of development.

People want to know; what do you love about djing? Is it being able to get people to dance? Or watching your superhuman Dj skills? Or did you make a deal with a wizard? I love introducing people to new music or playing something they haven’t heard in a while, watching people dance and connect with the music. I’m really passionate about supporting new music especially local music! Last question; we'll sort of. Leave us with a quote: Stop waiting for “the right time” to try something new. The right time is right now and you will never feel “ready”. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, you will learn from them and sometimes a mistake can lead to something wonderful. Say yes, live fearlessly and try not to let your anxiety hold you back from all the things you want to do. You can find DJ Xerstorkitte on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/xerstorkitte/
