Darkside of the Con II band interview: Ego Likeness -VF Interview Archives

Interview by Morticia

(Interview “Mini-view” from March 2018)

When did Ego Likeness form? What is the origin behind the band name?

Steven (Archer) and I started EL in 1999. The name “Ego Likeness” comes from the classic sci-fi novel ‘Dune’. In simple terms, it’s a portrait of a person that captures what their ego and essence looks like, rather than their outer appearance.

How many band members are there and what are their stances in the band?

Steven Archer: programming, synths, live guitar

Mike K Johnson: live drums

Rick Furr: live guitar

And me, Donna Lynch: lyrics, vocals, occasional piano

Steven and I co-write all the music.

What are band practices like? Do you have a set time each week?

No, we don’t practice together at all. Steven and I run through the set right before a show or a tour. We send the tracks to Mike and Rick and they learn their parts on their own time. We all live a few hours away from each other.

What has been your biggest challenge as a band?

Probably figuring out what we “are”. We float somewhere between goth, industrial, darkwave, electro, and alt rock, but don’t completely fit any of those categories. Good luck marketing THAT to the right group, haha! It’s taken a lot of years to cultivate our audience.

If you guys could play at any venue anywhere, where would it be?

I can’t think of a specific venue, because we’ve been fortunate enough to play a lot of good ones already. But we’ve always wanted to do Wave Gotik Treffen in Germany, and some of the other EU festivals. Terminus in Calgary, too.

Do you have a Motto for the band? Or a superstition?

Not really. The guys do laugh at me for my van rules—things like: no fish in the van, no fireworks in the van, don’t talk smack about anyone until we’re IN the van, if you didn’t drive you don’t get to cry about being tired...things like that.
