Deathrock is Not Reviving: Shrouds

Updated: Jul 6, 2020

As of late we have taken notice that other journalists have made claims of a Deathrock revival -- and that just is not the truth. Another issue is that some articles have made claim that certain bands are the "Kings of Deathrock" and that is also inaccurate information. I mean to even use those three words, is such an erroneous deliberation. So we are starting a little segment here at Goth Haus LA called "Deathrock is Not Reviving." This causes a matter of concern for articles being written on Deathrock bands. They are labeling bands that are not Deathrock, Deathrock. Now, just because a band might dress like a deathrocker, or enjoys Deathrock does not mean their music is Deathrock. A lot of these bands are post punk, shoegaze, horror punk, and dark wave/goth rock bands that are being labeled as Deathrock. Even streaming services have categorized a bunch of punk, post punk, dark wave, new wave and goth rock bands as "Deathrock."Our reasons for this is to correct the misinformation going out. We are smaller, and more DIY - but one thing we can offer you is facts, truth and we promise to not mislead you. Lastly, Deathrock is NOT having a revival, it survives and thrives. The issue is that many Deathrock bands around the world are hard to find because they do not have a massive amount of followers, and some do not even have social media. It may be hard to find, but if you look for it you will find it. As someone once said "We are the underground, of the underground." We are starting this segment knowing we may get sh** for this, and we frankly don't give a fu**. We will not break our promise to our followers that we will set the record straight. Each segment will cover a Deathrock band. We are trying to help the bands and the people by doing this -- it is the only way we know how to. We have no malicious intentions, just want to share these things.

Shrouds is a Deathrock band that Steven Rivera (singer) gave birth to in 2011 - he started writing songs and making music. By, 2012 he was jamming out with Grimm Beats - and then formed full on Shrouds with the talented bass player Ludwig Wilde.

Shrouds literally breathes deathrock - and that is not an exaggeration. Check this video out below.

If you want to listen to real raw Deathrock, Shrouds is truly where it is at. Next time you read about Deathrock bands having a revival, remember that is false information. It thrives and has always been inherent and alive. Next time you hear a band that was labeled Deathrock, remember it might not actually be Deathrock. We are not elitist, we just want to educate all that may be being mislead, or being confused. This is also sadly hard and frustrating for bands that have been around playing Deathrock, they get dismissed or not seen for many reasons. Usually, due to people not doing the research, not being able to find bands, or because the band might not have a huge following (some will ignore bands that do not have a large follow count). And, finally remember that goth is a music based subculture, fashion is a choice. Social media is great, but people are twisting this music based subculture, and we can tell you now that it is not about online fame or about unboxing items or trying on clothes on youtube, it is and always will be about the MUSIC.

When in doubt listen to Shrouds!
