Skateboarding Interview: Leondra Kane

Meet Leondra! She’s pretty cool! We had fun working with her on these questions!

When did you start skateboarding? Tell us your story!

Skateboarding has always been a part of my life, since I was a kid. I got my first skateboard when I was around 4 or 5. My mom took me to Walmart and I picked one out. I remember the board had a spider man graphic on the bottom. I was super stoked and could not wait to get home and try it out instantly. I first started teaching myself in the driveway how to go down the hill without jumping off, And just getting comfortable. When I was about 8 I started bombing the big hill in front of my house with a few of my friends that had boards. I started learning heelflips when I was about 13. I started to really fall in love with the sport after I graduated junior high school. When I was 15 I traded my call of duty black ops 2 for my friend's DGK skateboard, I skated that board everyday for 2 years practicing flat ground tricks. I've always loved skating. I never started taking it seriously until about 7 years ago.

Many skaters have their favorite set ups, but we won’t put you on the spot here haha. Instead tell us two things! What bearings are your fav, and what is your favorite grip tape?

My favourite bearings to skate are Bones Reds. I’m a fan of many griptapes brands but my all time favourite griptape is grizzly griptape.

If you could say something to your younger self with the knowledge you have today what would it be?

As a kid I was always anxious to do things in a hurry and I was always on the go. One thing I would tell my younger self is to slow down and take your time, there’s no need to rush things, be patient , stay motivated. I would also like to say anything that you put your mind to you can do it.

We work with many skaters, and one question we always like to ask is what do you say to the dudes that think skateboarding is “only” for guys?

My entire life I was told not to do something that I enjoy doing because I'm a girl. I tell those people there's no law against me being a female skater. Girls can do whatever they want. Don't let other people's opinions discourage you.

So, you just joined “Raw Cut Skateboarding” as a team skater! How exciting! How did this happen?

It is very exciting. I'm not entirely sure how it happened. I think the raw cut instagram page was liking my posts and commenting then they sent me DM about signing up to join the team and so I signed up and they got back to me. And I’m extremely blessed and thankful to be a part of the rawcut team.

Rawcut Skateboards is made by skaters for skaters!

I have heard you play the guitar, as you might know we are heavily involved in music. How long have you been playing?

I've been playing guitar for about 14 years.

While we are on the subject of music; what are some bands/artists/musicians you dig?

When it comes to genres I'll listen to almost any genre of music. I like bands like Avenged sevenfold, Bullet for My Valentine, Sum 41, Three Days Grace, Metallica, Trivium I could go on forever. Some of the artists I'm bumpin right now are , Kevin Gates, Juice Wrld, DaBaby , Lil Wayne, Drake, Lil Peep, Key Glock, and Machine Gun Kelly.

Are there any tricks you feel took you extra work to master? Tell us about that?

I'd say tre flip is definitely a trick that is needed and still needs extra work. For some reason I can have that trick down one day and then the next day can't land it at all! I'm gonna say tre flip,

Morticia: Hah Tre flips is like this for almost everyone! haha I feel this!!!!!!!!!

When the pandemic started did anything change for you in skateboarding? Like did your local spots shut down? I know some of my spots got fenced up when there was not even a fence before!

I was actually able to skate more street spots during the pandemic than before. I'm usually skating parks and my local got closed down for a bit.

When did you realize you loved skateboarding? And do you have any advice for girls that are just getting into skateboarding?

I knew I loved skating when it became the only thing on my mind. When I was in school I remember I was finishing my homework during class so I could go home and skate and not worry about homework.

Is there any cause or issue that you stand for? If, so tell us about it!

One issue that bothers me is that there are no indoor parks around where I live so when it rains or snows there's no place to skate. They don’t want us skating parking garages or other spots but we don’t have any indoor parks.
