“Andy Dean has enough talent for 10 people” -Fan quote
When did The Rain Within form? What is the origin behind the band name?
Though the idea had been floating around in my head for a while, I consider 2014 to be the true beginning of The Rain Within. That's the year I recorded and released my first EP, and more importantly that's when I got a true sense of what I wanted this project to be. I had recorded songs under the name before that time, but it was something different. As for the band name, I took it from the Bella Morte song "The Rain Within Her Hands." As Bella grew from two members to five, one of them being a live drummer, our classic material didn't translate so well to the stage anymore, so it kind of got lost. And I missed it a lot. The Rain Within has given me an outlet for those stripped-down, synth-driven songs that I loved so much, so giving a nod to those days seemed appropriate.
How many band members are there and what are their stances in the band?
As far as studio work The Rain Within is just me. I handle everything from song writing to recording and mastering, and I love having that level of control over what I'm creating. You're hearing exactly what I intended without the touch of an outside producer or engineer. Now touring is a different story. Mike Johnson is my partner in crime on the road, and has been drumming for Rain for most of the life of the project.
What are band practices like? Do you have a set time each week?
Mike and I rarely ever rehearse together. We learn our parts separately and combine them at shows. We use sound check to brush up on anything we're unsure of. I realize we're unconventional, but it has worked out great for us so far, so I'm not changing a thing.
What has been your biggest challenge as a band?
The toughest thing is finding enough hours in the day to get everything done that needs doing. Things have happened so quickly for me, and that has meant a much larger workload. But I enjoy the work and love this project with all my heart. It has helped me through some difficult times and led to some pretty fantastic adventures. It's hard to complain about something I care so much about.
If you could play at any venue anywhere, where would it be?
Oh man that is tough! I want to play any and everywhere! Japan, Russia, Sweden, you name it. And I'm keeping my eyes on all the summer festivals in Europe as well. And I am beyond excited for Human Music at QXTs this May, NEON in Rhode Island this summer, and the Gothic Cruise in September!
Do you have a Motto for the band? Or a superstition?
I've used "Synthpop with a neon pulse" here and there. As for superstitions, not a damn one.
